Service Dog Training Programs

At Dutton’s K9 Training & Grooming, we offer customized service dog training for individuals with various disabilities. Every dog is trained in practical, reliable, and life-enhancing tasks tailored to the handler. Below are the types of service dogs we train and sample tasks they can perform.

Autism Assistance Dogs

These dogs are trained to improve safety, support emotional regulation, and build independence for children and adults with autism.

Task Examples:

  • Deep Pressure Therapy to reduce overstimulation or meltdowns
  • Tactile Stimulation (nuzzling, pawing, licking) to help refocus
  • Interrupting self-harm or harmful behaviors with nudging or nose-bumping
  • Tracking & Trailing to quickly locate a lost child
  • Companionship to lower anxiety and improve confidence
  • Exit Alerts: notifying a parent or guardian if a child leaves the home or gets out of bed
  • Blocking / Body Buffering to prevent bolting or guide a child safely away from danger

PTSD, Depression & Anxiety Support Dogs

Psychiatric service dogs help provide grounding, stability, routine, and safety during emotional or psychological episodes.

Task Examples:

  • Medication reminders
  • Deep Pressure Therapy during panic attacks
  • Tactile grounding such as nuzzling or licking to interrupt dissociation
  • Alerting to escalating emotion or oncoming panic
  • Interrupting self-harm or repetitive behaviors
  • Retrieving a self-care or comfort kit
  • Waking handler from nightmares
  • Interrupting flashbacks
  • Searching or clearing the home
  • Helping stabilize daily routines
  • Body blocking positions
  • Space creating in crowded areas

Medical Alert & Medical Response Dogs

Our medical service dogs support individuals with chronic medical conditions by alerting to episodes or assisting during emergencies. (Examples include diabetic alert, seizure response, and more.)

Task Examples:

  • Tactile interruption during a seizure (nuzzling, licking, pressure)
  • Retrieving medication from a designated location
  • Fetching a drink or snack for medical episodes
  • Bringing a phone to the handler or pressing an emergency button
  • Alerting to low blood sugar
  • Alerting to high blood sugar
  • Alerting a caregiver to unconsciousness
  • Alerting a caregiver to breathing irregularities
  • Alerting to alarms from medical equipment

Mobility Assistance Dogs

Mobility dogs help individuals with physical disabilities increase independence, stability, and everyday function.

Task Examples:

  • Pulling a wheelchair
  • Bringing a walker, cane, or mobility aid
  • Retrieving dropped items
  • Retrieving items from lower shelves or accessible areas
  • Counterbalance while walking
  • Bracing during balance loss, transitions, or to help the handler stand
  • Bracing up or down stairs
  • Helping a fallen handler return to their feet
  • Gently pushing a leaning handler back to center
  • Pushing buttons to open doors
  • Momentum pulling
  • Assistance going up ramps or slopes
